‘no one has ever written ‘fuck’ in a report hannah’

I recently spent some time in NYC, visited some amazing places and met some amazing people.. This is part of the report I wrote about a visit myself and another student made to Grey Group- submitted as part of a Uni file recording my visits there.

Tim Mellors is the International Chief Creative Director of Grey Group, he has work as Creative Director for Saatchi and Saatchi, Publicis and at some point or another he has worked for almost all of the big agencies in the business.

I spent about an hour and a half with Tim Mellors, towards the end of this time Tony Kaye, renowned director, and Frederic Temin, who runs the French division of Grey, came and met us- on the rooftop of 200 5th Av. Tim described the three of them as ‘le infant terrible of our business’.

When we arrived Tim was just finishing a meeting and we were invited it and sat down in his office, as he continued to wrap up the meeting, with one leg up on the side of his arm chair and ‘fuck’ as ever other word.

Tim Mellors first worked for DDB  in New York in the 60’s, he was a heroin addict, he was fired. He was fired from his first six agencies.. had an affair with his mentors daughter, got fired again.

‘I have no talent.. I know people, people like me.. America will give you more of a chance, they like helping people out and giving you opportunities over here… I’ve been in jail, I shouldn’t have a visa.. but here I am, you have to bullshit.. no not bullshit, but well.. make it work for you.. my son is now the face of Armani.. daughter, Coco, works for W, writes for Victoria Secret and she hasn’t even graduated yet… get out there, do stuff.. I can’t give you any advice.. work hard.. go for it.. a big account in the UK is 5 million, that’s tiny over here, a big account for us in 100 million.. the US is more professional, this is business and its been bigger business over here for longer.. when I lived with Ridley Scott… when I was painting cows heads with Warhol downtown.. Don’t be the nice guy who backs down on your ideas, anyone can be soft and do what they are told.. be personal, something has to resonate with you.. it’s all bollocks.. what can I tell you? What do I know? Forget what you’re told about qualifications mattering, get them, but they’re bollocks… I fell into this… it’s all chance… Luck, that’s the most important thing, you need luck… It’s all about who you know.. use people.. make connections.. I’ll decide in the first five minutes of meeting someone whether I want to hire them or not.. next year you’ll learn everything you need to know, its bollocks but do it… look, he’s a great writer, far better than me.. but he’s straight, anal, perfectionist.. and me, I was a heroin addict.. and you, you want to be more like me…I’ve got a long way with not a lot of talent.. seriously, I just hire people who are better than me… The reason I work is because I am a survivor.. you have to survive this world… and you’ve got to be a nutter for this business, Tony- he’s a genius but a fucking nutter- Frederic is another one… the three of us stood here are le infant terrible of our business.. we have all had massive successes and massive lows, that goes with being creative.. this day right now could be a massive turning point in your life, or it could not be, it’s up to you. Walk away and do what the fuck you want. I don’t know what to tell you… get out all of your shit ideas so you can have space for one good one.. don’t do it, don’t get into the business.. I’ve spent all my life complaining about this world, but it’s given me a good life.. I go full circle… I’ve always said I would never let my children get into the business… My daughter works for grey in London and my niece to…  women are doing well now, boys are stupid and immature, see that meeting- six women and one man.. knowing who you are.. that’s important.. and I don’t mean like at a party when you tell someone you name, age and where you grew up.. but like who the fuck are you?.. who were you, who are you this moment and who will you be… that matters… don’t just be the nice guy…
Tony Kaye interjected.. ‘you must be proactive to progress..’
‘see I told you he was a nutter.. it’s all bullshit’.
